Solving the Cross
Solving the cross is the first part to solving a Rubik’s Cube in many different. Solving a cross means to solve the edges of the first layer (which creates a “t”, plus sign, cross or what ever you want to call it).
I recommend solving the cross on the bottom because if solved at the top, the cube will need to be flipped over when doing the first two layers and valuable inspection time will be lost. Also, solve the cross on the black (or white) layer because my tutorials assume that the black/white layer is on the bottom. When I first started cubing, I solved the cross on the top which was a very bad habit to break. If solving the cross on the bottom is learned now, there will be no need spend a lot of time to try to change a habit.
Since the cross is so general, I will not create a tutorial for this until the other parts are finished. Here are some links on how to solve the cross:
Bob Burton: Solving a Cross
Dan’s Cubestation: Solving a Cross
Ryan Heise’s Tutorial This makes the cross look complicated but this just covers the different cases. It will become intuitive after practice.
Don’t worry too much about the move count. Just make sure that the cross is able to be correctly solved in a reasonable amount of time.
When you finish solving the cross, continue to solving the corners of the first layer.
