First Layer Corners

The next part to solving a Rubik’s cube is to solve the first layer corners. This part assumes that the cross is solved correctly. Note that in this tutorial, I use black instead of white. Also, I use black on the bottom and yellow on the top. The blue layer pictured here is the front layer and the red layer is the right layer.

First, go find a corner that has a black corner that is on the yellow layer. If there is no cubies with a black sticker on the top (yellow) layer, read this section to find out what to do. Identify the other two colors and then position this cubie above those two colors by rotating the yellow layer. Below are examples of the different possibilities. Find the diagram with the position of the cubie and use the algorithm. The black sticker can either face left, right or up. Depending on which one is present, use the algorithm to drop it into the first layer. Note that there may be multiple move sequences because different sequences better suit different people’s hands.

Beginner's Method Corner 1st case

  • F R’ F’ R
  • R U R’

Beginner's Method Corner 2nd case

  • U R U’ R’
  • R’ F R F’

Beginner's Method Corner 3rd case

  • R U R’ U’ R U R’ U’ R U R’ U’ (The same sequence three times)
  • R U2 R’ U’ F R’ F’ R
  • R U2 R’ U’ R U R’

No Black Corners on Yellow Layer

Sometimes, there may be no black corners on the yellow layer or the cubie is on the black layer but is not rotated right. This means that all four corners with black pieces are on the black layer. But, this may not mean that it is not solved. First, check that not all the pieces are solved. Go to a corner that is not in the right slot. Perform the algorithm R U R’ looking at the cube like the diagram shows. After the algorithm is performed, the cubie should be on the top layer and then it will be possible to proceed to solve like normal.

  • R U R’
  • F U’ F

After executing this step correctly, the first layer (bottom and black in this case) should be completely solved. It should look like this:

Now, you can continue to the next step of inserting the middle layer edges.
